چکیده

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced plans to regulate emissions of mercury to the atmosphere from coal-fired power plants. However, there is still debate over whether the limits should be placed on a nationwide or a plant-specific basis. Before a nationwide limit is selected, it must be demonstrated that local deposition of mercury from coal-fired power plants does not impose an excessive local health risk. The principal health concern is exposure of pregnant females to methyl mercury in seafood. This paper presents a quantitative assessment of the health risks for populations within 50 km of a power plant. Probabilistic risk assessments were performed for two power plants, Bruce Mansfield in western Pennsylvania and Monticello in eastern Texas. Local hourly meteorological data was obtained for these sites and deposition modeling was performed for a region 50 Km around the site. Risk assessments were performed for two population groups (general and subsistence fishers) and the modeled deposition patterns. The risk assessments indicated that for the general population local deposition associated with the emissions from the coal-fired power plant were small (< 10 risk of observed neurological effects) but risks could be two orders of magnitude higher for subsistence fisher populations. Estimated risks were more highly dependent on consumption patterns than increases in deposition due to coal-fired power plant emissions.

Mercury pollution in vegetables, grains and soils from areas surrounding coal-fired power plants

Mercury contamination in food can pose serious health risks to consumers and coal-fired power plants have been identified as the major source of mercury emissions. To assess the current state of mercury pollution in food crops grown near coal-fired power plants, we measured the total mercury concentration in vegetables and grain crops collected from farms located near two coal-fired power plant...

Does proximity to coal-fired power plants influence fish tissue mercury?

Much of the mercury contamination in aquatic biota originates from coal-fired power plants, point sources that release mercury into the atmosphere. Understanding mercury dynamics is primarily important because of the toxic threat mercury poses to wildlife and humans through the consumption of contaminated fish. In this study, we quantified the relative importance of proximity to coal-fired powe...

Mercury concentrations in wetlands associated with coal-fired power plants.

There have been contradictory reports of the relative proportion of mercury from coal-fired power plants that deposits locally. Our objective was to determine any local effect of coal-fired power plants on total mercury concentrations in wetland sediment and tadpole samples. Four power plants and 45 wetlands were selected for study. Total mercury concentrations were determined in 75 sediment sa...

Quantification of radionuclides and associated radiological risk estimation of coal combustion residues from a South African coal-fired power plant

Background: Radionuclides occur in coal combustion residues, such as fly ash and bottom ash, which are by-products of coal combustion. They pose potential radiological risks to people present in the surrounding areas. Materials and Methods: Gamma spectrometry was performed to determine the radionuclide activity concentrations in a coal-driven power plant located in the Limpopo province, South A...
